Silica gel is an indistinct and permeable type of silicon dioxide (silica), comprising of a sporadic tridimensional system of substituting silicon and oxygen molecules with nanometer-scale voids and pores. The voids might contain water or a few different fluids, or might be filled by gas or vacuum. In the last case, the material is appropriately called silica xerogel.
